Morning Light - iphone 14 Plus 26mm f1.5 Noir
I’m writing today as we all collectively watch the horrible fires happening in California. I am quietly going about my day today but with a bit of steel in my spine. I am quieter. I am steadier. I am grateful beyond measure for all that I have and still have and needed to make sure I documented this feeling in this moment. I’m preparing after several days of snow clean up here in Northern Virginia to try to head back to the studio. Time to make art. Time to channel the energy of helplessness, sorrow, grief, and all that follows along for the ride through my human circuitry up and out of myself by way of creative forms. In moments where I don’t know what to do with my emotions this is how my mind and body process them, by making. I have to do something with my brain and hands. So I’m going to to the studio and getting into it. I’m not sure what will come of it today, but I do know I’ve got a lot on my plate right now so there’s no room for rabbit holes. We know there are already ways to contribute to communities but one that I always start with is World Central Kitchen. If you feel so inclined here’s a link to their site.
One of the portions on my plate currently is the decision to blog more. I’m concerned about the direction social media platforms are going and the best way to communicate with people who follow me and my art is to utilize my site and the voice that I have, however muffled it gets amid the many out there. It matters and I’m still here. I want to channel more of what I’m doing into not only my visual art but also into writing because it’s also a great way to get clear about things. The written word, what a concept. I’m no Sedaris but I can type so get ready.
While it feels weird to share good news, we still need to hear it as it’s a pathway back towards hope so I’m sharing this. With the chaos of the holidays I forgot to share that I was interviewed by Canvas Rebel Magazine. They are an online platform highlighting creatives and entrepreneurs who are within every community but not yet in the spotlight. I’m honored to have been included in their roster and you can read the article by clicking on the image below.
The idea of creating content that is video based with my face in it scares me beyond measure. I’m a behind the camera kind girl. But I do think a gentle shift more into blogging and dare I say, vlogging could be in my future. I love a good voice over. For now I’m going to put down more here and will utilize email, Instagram and Bluesky to communicate. And if you’re reading this but not subscribed to my actual newsletter, which will now be a synopsis of what the months writings will be, click on the “Subscribe” button at the top menu and you can enter your details. I’m really glad you’re here.
New Year, New Class, New Work, oh my!
Happy New Year! I hope that the holiday season was kind to all. I had a wonderful snowy break up in New York with family and friends. The year has started with lots of busyness that I’m balancing with deep rest. I’ve been deep cleaning my home and the excavation is helpful to deep clean my head and heart too. Making room for all that is next and all that I want to call in.
To that, I’m excited to announce I will be offering a one day Mixed Media Journaling Workshop this coming Saturday January 11th 2025 at the Workhouse Arts Center. We’ll 4 hours to experiment with simple gelli printing techniques to create collage papers, image transfer methods that allow you to make certain images transparent for cool layering effects, and some basic collage fun! The tuition covers instruction, and comes with one of my sketchbooks for free as well as access to basic supplies. Click the link below for more information and to sign up if you’re local and interested!
I also want to officially invite you all to my show at the Workhouse as the February Featured Artist on Saturday February 8th from 6-9pm. It’s the Second Saturday Open Studio Night for February and there will be other activities going on throughout the campus so it’s a great night to come out. I have a new body of work I am excited to share along with a mixture of the past years accomplishments. I hope you can make it!
For the rest of this month it’ll be show prep followed by some studio reorganizing and major admin. It is Residency Application Season so that’ll be a lot of time on my computer. The year has lots of possibilities including getting some of my work into a gallery. But another major goal I have is to get my digital work more traction and possibly create some digital downloads and textiles. To help me with this I’ve actually joined a creative on-line group called The Foundry. I’m excited to have access to a large cache of experts and industry knowledge so stay tuned.
For now I’m going to go grab another coffee, catch up with a friend and then hunker down for the next few days as the area prepares for a snow storm which I am SO EXCITED FOR! I have multiple cameras and my snow boots ready! Hope everyone stays safe and warm and as always, come say hi if you are in the area!
Thank you for being here~
End of year thoughts & plans for 2025
I’m very excited to announce that I am working on a new body of work in preparation for my 1st solo show at the Workhouse. I will be the Featured Artist for the month of February in the Building 6 Front Gallery and am thrilled to be working on a new collection to share. If you would like more information about his event please sign up and subscribe to my newsletter so we can stay in touch. Another reason to subscribe is to help me manage my presence and need for social media. For now I will only be posting on Instagram (no fb) & have joined Bluesky. I’m also working towards posting more videos on my YouTube channel which I’ll share when ready. (Yep, I have a YT channel!) I have so much I want to do & share and am finally settled enough in the studio to be able to set up some cameras and properly capture some things. very exciting!
I’m also working on some 1 day workshop proposals teaching Photo-based Mixed Media techniques, alternative book making & journaling methods. Will share details as soon as I know.
With only one more “Second Saturday” happening at the Workhouse this wknd that will start me closing out my sales for the year, and I want to thank you all!!! If you’re interested in a tshirt or sweatshirt on my site now is the time to order so you can get it by Christmas. All shipping for original works will be over the end of this week.
We are in the last few weeks of 2025, holidays are approaching and everyone is doing all the things we do to prepare for both possible festivities or possible quiet times. Possible busyness or possible down time. Possible chaos or possible calm. It’s a crap shoot depending on who you talk to and what their life looks like. I’m very much embracing the quiet that can come with these darker months. I know many people don’t respond well to the lack of light but for some reason I thrive here. I’m resetting my home after moving into the studio and am really ready to dial up the cozy, something I think we all need these days. I hope whatever you’re doing this season that you’re safe and healthy and can enjoy some of the light that still does exist. Thanks for being here and Happy Holidays~
Small Business Saturday, Upcoming Events and a gut check.
Thank you so much so much to everyone who came out to the Recent Works show! It was a wonderful wknd and we are so thankful for all the visitors we had and new friends made. Already planning next year fingers crossed!
Recent Works Show October 2024 Fairfax Railroad Museum
With the shows over I’m finally in the “Ok, now we’re talking!” stage of setting up my studio. I had so.much.stuff to go thru and there’s way more but it’s finally feeling organized enough to where I can go in and just work as opposed to having to dig for things. It’ll always be a work in progress as work shifts and changes but nice to feel that, “Click”. I’ve got a few exciting things going on this month. First is “Small Business Saturday” at the Workhouse on Saturday November 30th from 11am to 6pm. While I will NOT be there that Saturday I will have a lot of work available for sale in my studio 606A in Building 6! Much like ARTOMATIC I will have lots of things on display with prices marked so you can just take items to the front desk of Building 6 and purchase them there! So for anyone in the market for creative gifts that are locally made this year that’s a great day to check out the studios. More to come on my Instagram stories as I finalize my set up!
I also just found out I had my piece, “Meditation I” accepted into the Mixed Media Show at ArtWorks Art Center in Richmond, Virginia. The show opens Friday November 22nd and run thru January 2025. I’ll also be posting more details on my Instagram. Very exciting!
“The Trees in Hope Forest” Amy Bruce 2024
To close, I need to share where I am right now about the election because it effects all of us. Anyone who knows me knows I am comfortable being clear about my stance on politics. So it should be no surprise I am very upset at the election results. I will not engage in conversations online because after going thru this before (unbelievably!) I don’t want to expend my precious energy on the futile. I am choosing, as I slowly re-set my nervous system to focus on what I can do and can change. I can keep my community close and continue to build a network that is like-minded, humanity-centered and supportive. I can take care of my body, mind & spirit so I am able to withstand the inevitable blows we are going to be facing as citizens. And I can make art. That I can do. And that’s what I will continue to do everyday for the foreseeable future. I hope what I create continues to be of value to people because I know it’s invaluable to me. I am more grateful than ever for your continued support. Thank you.
Seeking the exhale.
I write this the morning after the massive hurricane in Florida. This coming thru just weeks after the storms that decimated parts of North Carolina, specifically Asheville. I’ve never been to Asheville, but I follow many NC Artists and to see their homes and studios and towns wiped away has given me pause as it has all of us. I don’t take for granted one day I have access to what I have access to. My plans for the rest of the year have shifted and will continue to shift as the literal tides and the future of so much hangs in the balance. I’m doing my research and have donated to several sources and will continue to do so as I am able. For now, making continues to save me and preserve my mental health when so much points to despair. I will continue to create things that I believe carry light into the world which God knows we need a lot of right now. That is all I’ll say about that.
This time of year is full of Fall energy and I am thankful here in Northern Virginia to feel some cool breezes and dry air greet me as I gulp my coffee this morning on my stoop. Art on The Avenue was this past weekend and it was amazing. I was so blown away at the response to the tshirts I want to take a moment and thank everyone who showed interest and made purchases either at the show or after online. All the designs are available on my site in a few different colors with lots of size options. I’m assessing all the feedback I received and plan to create a bunch more designs over the next few weeks so keep checking back.
Recent Works Show
The next show I’m in is next Friday and Saturday 10/18 & 19 in Fairfax. The Recent Works show is a great collections of talented Artist Educators to share their own work. I’ve been participating in this show for several years and it’s always such a wonderful Fall day so if you’re local it’d be great to see you there. I’m preparing a lot of new work and will have the tshirts and sketchbooks as well! Hope to see you there~
As the month of October ticks on I’m also learning my rhythms at my new studio space. I don’t have the same schedule each week which I LOVE! I need this to be flexible and so far so good. I’ll be there this Saturday 10/12 in the evening at Second Saturday and next Wednesday afternoon until 6pm to close up. I’m finding the early mornings are becoming appealing again which if you know how much I hated mornings in years past you’ll know that’s a good sign! When the studios are closed I’m loving that quiet time so my goal for the rest of the month and heading into November is to get there early and enjoy the peace I nurture until we can all have a collective exhale. I’ve got a lot of content I’d like to start creating too that will integrate the new things I’m adding to my site including the tshirts, canvas art patches, pouches and sketchbooks!
For now I do want to thank everyone for being here, for the new people I’ve met who’ve now subscribed to my newsletter and for anyone who’s been effected by the recent storms I’m sending support. Let’s continue to support each other.
Thanks for being here~
News from my STUDIO!!! (I've waited so long to say that!:)
I’m in! I’ve moved into my studio in building 6 studio #606A at Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia! It’s been a little over a month but I’ve gotten a lot done in a short amount of time. Partly because I was so excited to finally be in the space, but mostly because I’ve got shows coming up in October to get ready for. I’ll be honest, it was not easy getting this all sorted without extra hands so I hired some muscle from Lugg who had a truck and healthier vertebrae than myself to help with some of the heavier lifting and it was so worth it! Highly recommend. There’s a lot I’ve learned about this process of being in a proper studio that deserves it’s own blog post but for now I’ll say that it’s a remarkable thing to learn how to pace yourself. I don’t have to rush and get things ready for a class to come in. It’s just me, and that’s an incredible, insanely freeing feeling that I am so, so grateful for. I have lot’s of rearranging I already need to do which will have to wait until after the shows are winding down but for now it’s working just fine. Here’s the skinny on what’s happening next month.
I’ve been accepted in Art On The Avenue again this year, woohoo!!! The festival takes place Saturday October 5th from 10am to 6pm on Mt. Vernon Ave in Alexandria, VA. It’s a great event with a ton of artisans including food vendors and live music. I’ll be posting more info next week leading up to the day but I do know that at this point my booth is between Steward and E. Randolph Ave possibly in front of Los Tios restaurant. The morning of I’ll have that confirmed so go follow me on IG if you don’t already! I’m going to have a bunch of new things to share including some wearables and sketchbooks!!!
I am also happy to share that I’m participating in the 2024 Recent Works Show in Fairfax, Virginia October 18th and 19th. It’s been a long running collaboration of talented Artist/Teachers that has been held for over 20 years. I’m going to have some new original pieces this year that I’m excited about as well as some new faces participating. I hope to see a lot of you there, it’s going to be really fun!
My birthday is Thursday so I’ve taken a break this week and am getting outta dodge for a family wedding over the wknd. I’m excited and have a lot of ideas and plans but I’m realizing breaks are needed to recoup especially as I turn 55! Happy to share it all with you and hope to see you all at one or both of the shows!
Cheers, and thanks so much for being here~
Time for a change
I woke up today to a tornado warning. It was remnants of Hurricane Debby blowing into town and it was freakishly dark outside at 8 am still. I was really surprised at how dark actually. The rain started and while thankfully no tornadoes touched down it was an eerie way to head into what is kinda the unofficial last weekend of the summer since teacher return next week. (Some muscle memory will never fade!) It was also a reminder of how quickly things can shift and change.
This particular weekend also marks my crossover into my second year after leaving teaching and it’s been a busy year with a lot of realizations. Main one being, I need more room to work. So it’s kind surreal that next week I will be signing a contract for a new studio! I’m officially joining the Lorton Workhouse and will have a studio on campus for the next year. I’m going to see my new space next week and my hope is I will be able to move in soon thereafter, like next week! But however soon I move in I want to try and take everybody along with me as I build this new studio space out. I have NO IDEA how this will go since I’m terrible at remembering to film stuff 😄but I’m going to try. The process is also going to force a major clear out of my place & my storage unit so I’m going to be doing some Flash Sales on my Instagram as a way to make room for new work so keep an eye out for weekly posts in my feed & stories.
Still working on a site update amid all this change but first things first. For now I’ll keep this post short and sweet. More coming as I get the keys!
Pausing
Hello everyone. Finally taking a moment to get a few thoughts down mid summer break. I had an amazing market day in June at the @ Canal Center Events Art Market & want to thank everyone who came by! I was thrilled with the feedback I received from so many of you and hope you continue to follow along my creative journey.
I’ve taken the month of July off and by off I mean OFF OFF! I’ve pulled back significantly from generating work, am resting a lot, finding exercise that works for me as my energy ebbs and flows, and am taking a hard look at my severely neglected condo! I did get up to NY & had a grand time with the fam and hope to take a few more baby trips this next month before crunch time/show & holiday season prep. Time is wild these days.
I’ve been leaning into some slowness & paying attention to how my brain and nervous system are reacting. Nice to have more moments of calm than fear most days (minus this past week, right? Geez!🙄)I’m finding comfort in my morning pages routine along with some grounding on the grass out by my back stoop & even some Qigong when I remember! Seriously, my memory is whacked lately and while I’m sure there’s chemical reasons for this (I need magnesium & zinc for sure) it’s also screen overload. So…yer girl is trying to get away from the digital world whenever possible, which is super easy when it’s 105 degrees out but I digress. :) This is really been a time of excavation of both stuff as I reset my home with overdue updates & a possible new couch (Why are they so expensive?!) and of ideas and projects I’ve both held onto for too long and ones I want to explore more. As I am planning for the future of this whole creative business I hope to have some exciting news on that front in the coming month or two. But in the meantime it’s game on in the clear out department! I might even have a Summer Sale up my sleeve in the next few weeks, so check my Instagram as well as your email as I’ll let all you subscribers know first! And if all goes according to my insane plan, there will be more than artwork involved in this sale. 😏 Think vintage meets up-cycle meets treasures from my own collections of, well everything! Also my 100 Day Project Artist Proofs will be available on my site by months end so that too.
Thanks for being here & I hope you’re having a positive summer~
New work & new goals and a little break.
100 Day Project 22024 - Amy Bruce Studios LLC Copyright
Welp, I finished it! I finished the 100 Day Project and feel really excited about the work I created. Since starting this creative practice in 2017 I’ve found it to be really valuable to my creative practice as both generative and restorative. The time frame is great because it’s not right after a busy holiday season so you have a moment to exhale, but early enough in the year that it gives you a pace to lean into for the first quarter and then by April, you’ve got a huge pile of work to consider and reflect on over the summer. Which is exactly what I’m planning to do. I’ve managed to start the sorting process after putting them all together to find patterns. I’ve got a few themes forming and have printed small “Artist Proofs” which I’ll have available this weekend at the Canal Center Art Market on Saturday 6/15 from 1-6pm. I’ll be working on creating some one of a kind pieces with some images and getting some into print collections that I’ll be releasing for pre-order as the summer closes so stay tuned.

The summer is an interesting time especially now that I’m not having to abide by a teaching schedule. I’ve happily leaned into my own pace over the past year and have adapted to the muscle memory of lesson planning to my creative practice in that I now see the whole year in quarters just shifted from academic to tax-based! While it’s necessary for business purposes it’s extremely helpful when laying out my scattered goals and project ideas as well as planning ahead for shows or any applications I may submit. It’s been a LOT of new information to navigate with various deadlines hitting throughout the year but I’m gradually getting a handle on some kind of rhythm. I’m grateful for both the time to learn new things and the fact that I have flexibility in my approach which frankly is pretty slow compared to many but I’d like to think steady. I’m not interested in the grind anymore and my goal is to create a practice and business that is both sustainable and manageable. So with that I’m going to be taking a little step away from screens for the month of July and most of August. I’ve applied to several shows and residencies and have my biggest show of the year to prepare for in October (Yep, Art On The Avenue! But more on that to come!) so if there was ever a time to take a break it’s now. I’ll be sending a mini update for July and will see where the rest of the summer takes me. For now, thank you for being here and I hope to see some of you this weekend!
Reflecting & planning...and drinking coffee.

Welp, it’s over. Artomatic has officially closed it’s doors and we have deinstalled the entire show. I’m forever grateful to the organizers who made this massive event happen and to all the patrons who came. It was AMAZING! I’m so thankful to have had the experience, to have had more eyes than I’ve ever had see my artwork as I’m expanding my practice and to meet people and engage in thoughtful conversations. Such good stuff. I’m sorting through shop updates to include more notecards and stickers that I had at the art market so those will be on my site soon along with a little spit and polish of things. I’m hopeful Artomatic will happen again, maybe next year, maybe in a few years. But either way it was a welcome experience I believe for all involved. We needed it. Thank you again for all your support and for everyone getting this newsletter for the first time, welcome!!!
It’s remarkable that it’s already the middle of May! I’m happy to have plans forming and some exciting things to share that I can’t quite tell you about yet but will soon. First off, I’ll be participating in the Canal Center Art Mart in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday June 15th from 1-6pm. Keep checking back to their platform for more details and I’ll be posting info on my IG too. It’s a great little nook by the water in Old Town where Alexandria Arts Council is bringing some activities and opportunities for artists.
Workspace preview
My workspace is basically a table in my condo surrounded by various storage systems I’ve cobbled together over the years! I’m thrilled to now have a piece of family furniture that is not Ikea to help shore up all my things and I just reset the entire space to make it more accessible which feels so good. I may share next month if you’re interested! And yes, of course…coffee! (and water!) :)
I will also be finishing my most recent run of the 100 Day Project soon and plan to be releasing a few collections from that project. I want to create some groupings and am excited to share them with you! I plan to have a few pieces at the event at Canal Center in June as well. I’m also planning some photo projects for the summer that will allow me to use several different cameras as I go on my yearly road trips. Definitely planning to document that on IG so check out my feed if you’re interested.

I am again, so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to share my work this past year and to have more people respond to it. I’ve always felt a little zap of healing energy after creating an image and that’s something I want to pass onto others. So know that the intention with all my pieces is to give a moment of peace & wonder amid the potential daily chaos.
That’s all for now. Thanks for being here!
A chatty blog & a recipe!
Amy Bruce Studios Artomatic Marketplace 4/6/2024
I participated in the Artomatic Marketplace this past weekend on 4/6 and it was amazing! Thanks to all the organizers for putting this together and making it run so smoothly and to my market neighbors I met, it was great vibe all day. I’ve participated in markets on and off in between teaching for over 15 years and it’s always an adventure because you’ve got to constantly adapt to your set up to the space and the environment. I’m partial these days to indoor markets for the ease of set up and this year I polished up my presentation with some new displays which I’m so please with. It was great chatting with people about how they will use their purchases like my canvas patches on their jackets and pants! If you’re one of them and you’re willing to share how you’ve used them DM me on Instagram and I can share it! I’ll be posting new stickers, notecards, patches and mini prints on my site soon!
As I was getting ready for this show I had a few major epiphanies about my work habits. I’m so used to cramming in my art in between school that I am still working in fits and bursts which inevitably wears me out. This past year has been an exercise in resetting my nervous system to calm and part of that is to pace myself when it comes to getting prepared for shows, etc. I know now little chunks of work every day is better than procrastinating and blasting through. Some tools that help me with that include my planner journal that I pretty much carry everywhere. It is my receptacle for thoughts, ideas in addition to being a hardcopy calendar. This practice has helped me so much over the years and I treasure all the journals that have piled up.
Amy Bruce Studios 2024 Journal Cover design & January Inspiration Spread
Apps I’m using! TeuxDeux
Another tool that I’ve started to use is the TEUXDEUX It’s a super streamlined digital todo list format that takes cues from the bullet journal format by allowing you to see your week and lists and move them from one day to another, cross them out or delete them. It also has lists at the bottom of your week that you can hide or view along with your week which for my ADD brain works well! I’m such a big picture thinker seeing all the things at once is helpful but to be able to drill down is ideal.
RECIPE ALERT! :)
My best tool for managing life right now is really managing my health by both moving my body and cooking good food. I just “Graduated” from 4 months of physical therapy which was really hard and really worth it! So now I have to keep going and keep increasing my strength. Protein helps but so do cookies! And having some sneaky recipes in my back pocket make me happy. It’s cool to know after working out and after my day of high protein snacks and hydration, I can not only have a treat, I can make more! We all need a treat these days. Thanks so much for being here.
WELCOME ARTOMATIC PATRONS!!!
I’m so glad you’re here!
If you want to purchase a piece from the show click HERE or go to the ARTOMATIC TAB in my Shop!
If you don’t see the artwork you’re interested in or have any questions send me an email at obscuragirl@gmail.com or DM me on IG @obscuragirl! :)
Since all works will be in the show and unavailable until after April 29th once payment is received all orders will be finalized via email confirmation to coordinate delivery/pick up.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and thank you so much for being here!!!
MARCH IS MARCHING!!!
MARCH, BABY!!! She’s here and man, she’s doing all the things! I’ve got a tentative schedule posted below including some other shows I’m happy to be a part of this month and links to their info.
Above is a surprisingly successful panoramic of my space at ARTOMATIC!!! I’m thrilled it all worked out and have had such a positive experience just this far with orientation, volunteer shifts and installation…and the show hasn’t even opened yet! People have been so great and the vibe is VIBING!!! So I encourage anyone able to find your way down one afternoon and give it a go. My plan for the month looks like this:

Whew…we are doing the thing! In addition to all that’s happening in DC I also have my piece, Flat White on display at Falls Church Arts this month in their Images Photography Exhibition which is a great show. I’m especially impressed that they now offer an online gallery option for all work in the show in case you cannot make it but want to see it and purchase a piece. I’ll be gallery sitting at some point as well if anyone wants to come by when I’m there. Will post that on IG when I figure it out!
I also have one of my pinhole images in the NJ Pinhole Club Exhibit I shared last blog. Here’s a link to the VIDEO which is worth a watch because there are a LOT of amazing images here! Big thanks to Heather Palecek for coordinating this entire show.
The goal for the next 48 hrs is to make sure my site is up to date enough to get thru the opening and (gulp!) have all the NEW PRINTS I’m sharing for sale available! I’m giving all my subscribers a discount for these when you order them on my site! Keep an eye out tonight for a separate email from me with a discount code for subscribers that gives you 10% off anything in the Artomatic tab in my shop from tonight thru to the show closing!
Thank you all SO SO MUCH for being here and trusting me with with your time because I do know it’s valuable and I appreciate you spending some of it so support me and my art! Hope to see some of you at the show! Cheers~
Artomatic and why you might see me laying down in a coffee shop.
Welp, I just spent an hour writing this newsletter only to discard it by accident with the push of a button! So here I am, rewriting what I thought was going to be a pretty meaty post but what will now be a short update on what’s happening, which is kind of a lot!
I’m prepping a bunch of pieces for the ARTOMATIC show in DC happening from March 8th to April 28th. I have my site selection this Saturday which will then determine what I’m including and how to display it. Plans are cooking! I also found out I did not get selected for a residency I applied for last month but it’s ok. Frankly there was a little relief after I found out because now I know where to focus my energy as I plan the next few months. But I’m getting closer and that’s progress.
I’m also participating in The #100 Day Project again and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a way to develop a new habit or creative practice. The image above is from my collection I did in 2017 that you can revisit HERE. It changed the game for me and helped me hone in on my practice by helping me see my progress. Any progress is important and counts. Somedays progress looks like sitting at the computer all morning skipping lunch till 2pm and getting shit done. Other days it’s just staring out the window at my favorite coffeeshop recovering from physical therapy nursing a coffee while I listen to my ambient playlist and fighting the urge to not to completely lay down flat in the booth! Both work and both matter. I think I’m getting closer to the balance I’m looking for which is the most important progress of all.
Thanks for being here~
Some epiphanies I've had & what I've been up to
I hope everyone had a peaceful holiday season and that 2024 has been kind to you thus far. It’s a snowy January day here and I’ve been working steadily on putting new systems into place to manage a lot of goals I’ve got for this year. I’ve learned that my spicy brain needs a structure, but freedom within that structure. Which leads to one of the epiphanies I’ve had recently about work and focus.
My 2024 Planner Journal
During my career as a teacher I was in a constant state of hypervigilance because I had to pay attention to so much going on around me all at once which made focusing very difficult. And when I did eventually carve out time to focus on my own work I was rushing myself to get things done out of fear I’d be interrupted and have to start all over again. Needless to say a state of flow was hard to come by and the drag on my nervous system was not sustainable. I’m definitely a big picture person so focusing has always been difficult for me. But my intention for this new phase of life wasn’t to continue to grind. It was to find my flow again and I think I’m on the right track. I’ve created a streamlined planner for myself that I use to help me plan my days better as well as my ipad for long term project planning. I’ve also dug back into my Skillshare account and found some resources that broke down the marketing piece I was struggling with. It’s coming together. And it does take time..but the catch is all this planning means nothing if I’m not patient and realistic about how much time things really take to get done and how important my time really is. If anyone is interested in how I’m planning these days (and why I take time to design the cover specifically for the energy I want to draw in for the year. :) maybe I could make some videos about it. Yes? Let me know if you’re interested in the comments or reach out on Instagram!
Scanned Pinhole Composite ABS 2023
To that I’ve been looking at how and where I want to spend my time this year. I’ve happily been digging back into my darkroom photo practice and have had the most fun using my Pinsta Camera. The image above is a composite of two shots I took in December down at Jones Point Park here in Alexandria. I scanned them and edited them in Photoshop. This camera is a remarkable thing that is so well designed and is basically a miniature darkroom. I’ve submitted some of the images I’ve taken so far to a pinhole exhibition with the NJ Pinhole Club and Unique Photo in honor of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. They’ve accepted all submissions for a digital exhibition but I also requested to be juried in for my work to be printed and displayed so more on that outcome soon. I’ve also submitted work to several exhibitions and residencies local and in various parts of the country so lot’s of irons in the fire currently. Hope to have news on things soon but in the meantime I’ll be posting on my Instagram more frequently this month in preparation for The 100 Day Project that starts in February. More on that soon as well! That’s all for now until I know more and get deeper in the swing of things now that one chunk of applications have been completed. Thanks for being here!
Year end wrap up and looking ahead
One more month of 2023 and honestly, I’m ok with it. As we close this year out I am making this last newsletter short and sweet with just some info about the new items that are available for sale on my site and a sincere thank you.
I’ve taken the leap and have uploaded a bunch of items in my online shop and while it’s been a pretty wild learning curve, I’m excited and motivated to keep building. I have original pieces, notecards, canvas patches, an original tshirt design and tote bag that are printed and shipped right to you.
I did have some prints I was going to sell through an outside vendor but upon getting the samples which were great quality, the fact that they come rolled isn’t what I wanted and I’d rather wait to find a better method of delivery for people.
I want to take a minute to thank everyone who has joined me on this year as I navigate this transition from my full time job to being a working artist. I am still in the early days of learning new systems and just how vulnerable I want to be on this machine! But it’s been so amazing to see the work I’ve been able to put into it pay off with new connections and slow but steady habits forming. I’m hooked! I hope you’ll stick around to see what’s next!
I hope everyone has a peaceful holiday season and sinks into these colder darker days and just takes time to pause and rest. Thank you for being here~
Pause for station identification
I’m “I know what this phrase means” old. :) If you know you know! Now that it’s November I’m able to come out of a wicked busy stretch. I feel stretched too. I did the things, posted, shared, reposted, blasted, commented, and with just 2 months left of the year, I’ve got just a few more things to tidy up and I’m done for 2023. And that feels right.
I’ve finally posted these pieces for sale here on my site! They’re in the Available Works tab and will be shipped starting November 10th. This is my first time utilizing this feature on my site, so you’re patience is greatly appreciated! I’m happy to answer any questions if you need, just DM me on IG or shoot me an email.
I will have more items posted in the next few weeks including some gift cards, journals and some canvas patches. Again, all new endeavor so I appreciate your understanding for the learning curve!
I’ll be posting on IG when these items will be up so keep an eye on that feed.
For now, I’m trying to take a breath, re-calibrate my days with some new routines including diving back into The Artist Way by Julia Cameron, or rather the workbook and Morning Pages. (More on that to come!) I’m also planning some things for 2024 that I want to make space for including some photography adventures with a new camera I’ve purchased, (low-fi pinhole magic!) and which I hope to document. I’m hardly able to say the word, “Content” but fundamentally that’s what might be happening, might be, maybe..we’ll see! Suffice it to say, if I can’t edit it on my phone, it’s not happening! LOL! Famous last words, eh?
For now, I’ll leave you with some cool images I created from a random photo walk I took yesterday. I love to find textures and manipulate them into something inexplicable. These were fun to mess with and I want to print them and work back into them soon. Until then, thanks for being here and again, if you have any questions about the work for sale don’t hesitate to get in touch. Cheers~
Updates and stuff
So I’ve got some very cool news. My image for the exhibition at The Anthenaeum in Alexandria has been chosen to be used both on the Anthenaeum site to advertise the show, but it was also chosen by East City Arts to represent the show on their site too. I’m thrilled! The show opens Friday 10/21 and runs until 11/16. The opening reception for this exhibit is Sunday 10/22 from 4-6,
“Flat White”
16” x 16” Digital Photograph mounted on wood cradle board.
The exhibition I’m in this Friday and Saturday is an amazing gathering of friends I’ve worked with as an Art Teacher for years. This talented lot comes together each year coordinated by the mega talented artist and teacher, Elaine Florimonte . Each artist will have their work for sale with a portion of the proceeds to go to the American Cancer Society, a cause close to all of us.
